2016 Safest Year Ever In Mining Industry

Mining safety has reached a new milestone – according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA,) fiscal year 2016 was the safest year in mining history. The agency reported that in 2016, a total of 24 deaths occurred in the mining industry, which is a 37% decrease over 2015. The Assistant Secretary of Labor, Joseph Main, credited the MSHA and the mining community as a whole for the decrease in fatalities, yet also cautioned the mining industry to continue its focus on safety.  “We are calling on all of our stakeholders, including mine operators, miners’ organizations, associations and trainers, to increase their attention to the conditions and hazards that are leading to fatalities,” stated Main. “Eliminating mining deaths and reducing injuries and illnesses is a goal that must be shared by all of us. We can – and must – strive to reach zero mining deaths.”

For Stonehouse Signs, this safety milestone is particularly exciting, as we are a company that recognized the need for safer mining practices starting in 1910. That’s when our founder, J.W. Stonehouse, created standard bell signal signs to better communicate in the mines, therefore reducing accidents and injuries. J.W. sold screen printed signs communicating the new bell signal standard after it was adopted by the mining bureau and became a safety standard in the mining industry. We’re pleased that mining safety has come a long way in 100 years!

Today, Stonehouse Signs continues the tradition of providing high quality safety signs and tags for all industries, including the mining industry. And Mine Safety Signs have evolved since we first started making them. Today we provide a variety of standard and custom signs and tags to the mining industry, such as the custom high intensity reflective signs pictured to the right that we produced for a Colorado coal mine. We also produce Confined Space Signs, PPE Signs and Custom Mine Signs designed to increase your mine’s safety, meet OSHA compliance, and reinforce good worker safety habits.
