Custom Interpretive Sign for Historic Mine

The history of Colorado is interwoven with the history of mining, and the Revenue-Virginius Mine is one example. The mine originally opened in 1876, the same year Colorado officially became a state. Located in Governor Basin at an altitude of 12,000 feet, the mine location posed logistical challenges, including keeping the miners warm and fed as well as hauling the mined ore from the site in the often extreme winter weather. Nonetheless, at its peak in the late 1800/early 1900s, the mine operated 20 hours a day, 7 days a week with over 400 miners living in boarding houses near the mine site. By the early 1900s, the mine had produced over $28 million worth of gold and silver ore. Yet after a devastating fire in 1915, the mine was essentially shut down, with several companies attempting to revive it in the following decades with no success.

Recently, however, a new company is finding initial success in revitalizing the mine by modernizing operations, while still paying tribute to the mine’s past. Starting in 2011, the site was “transformed [from a] dilapidated site into a state-of-the-art facility.” And despite decades having passed since the mine originally opened, the extreme weather is still a concern – one that the new mine addressed by building “structures designed to withstand heavy snow loads and avalanches.” Features of the historic mine site and town were preserved, which attract many tourists. So to celebrate the storied history of the mine and the new future of operations, the company turned to Stonehouse Signs for a Custom Interpretive Signs that describes the mine’s history.

The Custom Interpretive Sign we created for Revenue-Virginius Mine was large enough, at 4 feet by 6 feet, to accommodate nine full-color modern and historical photos with explanatory captions. And just as snow and extreme weather remains a concern for the mine, it does for Stonehouse Signs too – so we made the sign on our durable LxSign material, a high performing outdoor sign material that remains color bright for years despite exposure to the elements. The resulting sign is a great source for current and historical information on the mine site, and gives visitors the scope of the mine’s history.
