According to OSHA regulation 1910.132, Personal Protective Equipment (or PPE,) “including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact.” Translation? Employers have a responsibility to evaluate hazards workers may encounter at their workplace, and provide PPE to help shield workers against exposure to those hazards.

But what sounds simple isn’t always so. In a Bureau of Labor Statistic study, 78% of respondents said workplace accidents and injuries were their top working concerns. Yet the same study showed that for workers who sustained on-the-job injuries, the majority of them were not wearing proper PPE. Going further, from the respondents who observed non-PPE compliance in the workplace, 69% of those said the primary cause was workers thinking PPE was not needed.

This manufacturer came to us with a specific problem: they had a large number of PPE signs they needed to install and maintain, and wanted to streamline the process. So we made them a Custom 10”x14” PPE Sign on .040 aluminum that said: “Protective Equipment: The Following Must Be Worn In This Area (Please Check Appropriate Boxes)” and below that heading was a list of PPE with pictograms and checkboxes for any PPE that was required in that area – ear, eye, hard hat, gloves, safety shoes, respirator, face shield, protective suit, apron, and splash goggles were all options. This allows one standard sign to be used across the entire facility, which not only simplifies ordering and installation, it also increases worker comprehension (as opposed to having a variety of signs for different applications.) And when using this type of universal sign, a company could order and store extra signs, so in case a sign was damaged or went missing, another could be installed immediately, therefore eliminating the lag in worker communication.
