Custom Reproduction Signs for Trolley Museum

As a Custom Sign manufacturer, Stonehouse Signs has a range of abilities and services to help our customers tackle unique signage projects. This includes a museum customer that we’ve helped recreate several old custom trolley signs.

Our museum customer certainly had a unique sign project. As the owner of a museum that preserves and restores historic trolley cars, the customer needed several of their older trolley signs recreated, as the original signs were rusted and fragile and needed to be preserved. But the customer also needed the new signs to look nearly identical – the same layout, older font and faded colors – to fit with the rest of the vintage trolley’s look. Luckily Stonehouse Signs was able to come up with a way to recreate the vintage signs that maintained their original look, while adding modern features that ensure these signs will last for years.

While the original signs were steel, which can rust when exposed to outdoor elements, the new signs were manufactured on .080 aluminum with a protective clear top coat, which offers better durability when installed outdoors. In order for Stonehouse Signs to replicate the vintage sign as closely as possible, the museum customer carefully shipped us the original signs, and Stonehouse Signs’ designers digitally photographed, then digitally traced the design by hand to create an exact layout file. The designers also visually matched the paint colors as closely as possible, to preserve the look of the original sign. The results were a modern interpretation of a vintage sign – the new signs offer the durability of a new product, while maintaining the look of the original signs to fit with the museum’s aesthetic.
