Chalkboard vs. Whiteboard - both have their advantages and their proponents, however there are some serious drawbacks to using a chalkboard compared to a dry erase board, including chalk dust that may aggravate allergies.

Asthma and Allergies

Stonehouse Signs Chalkboard Dust Can Trigger Allergies

One of the biggest concerns to consider before you install a chalkboard or use chalkboard paint in your home are the affects of chalk dust on a family member who suffers from asthma. Chalk dust has been found to be associated with increased respiratory symptoms, school absences and medication for asthmatic children.

Particulate air pollution is any substance capable of staying suspended in air and entering the respiratory system.  Children are the most sensitive to particulate pollution since they can receive an increased dose to their lungs compared to adults.

Since a child breathes faster and their lung capacity is much smaller than an adult's, the amount of chalk dust particulates that could be deposited in the child's lung climbs significantly higher with each breath.

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI) chalk dust is recognized as one of the irritants that could trigger asthma and allergy attacks, including coughing, wheezing, rashes and eye irritation.  To avoid an attack, AAAAI recommends staying away from the chalkboard and erasers and wash your hands after writing on the board.

Keeping Your Space Dust Free

Stonehouse Signs Chalkboard DustUsing chalk on a chalkboard generates dust.  It could be right next to your refrigerator or in front of a classroom, but chalk dust gets everywhere.

It's on your hands, your clothes, and on the floor- it's even still on the board after you erase it.  Sure, cleaning it up isn't a huge deal, but is it really worth it?

Let's take it a step further and think about all the appliances and electronics that you use in your home.  Not only does chalk dust hang around in the air, it accumulates on everything.  From your coffee maker to your television, cooling fans suck chalk dust in, and accumulation of particles on any device’s inner workings can increase chances of overheating and decrease its lifespan.

This issue is one reason why more and more schools are replacing their chalkboards
with whiteboards - with ever-shrinking budgets, schools don't have the resources to replace computers, projectors and DVD players whose lives were shortened by chalk dust.

Consider contrast when choosing between a chalkboard with a dark background and a whiteboard with a light background.  Research studies consistently show that dark text on a plain (or light) background allows people to skim the information faster and increases comprehension.

Tests show that most people can read black text on a white background up to thirty-two percent faster compared to skimming or reading light text on a dark background.  In general, the greater the contrast between the text and background, the easier the information is to scan or read.

This could come in handy when you take one last glance at your dry erase board before you head out the door.

Advantages of a Whiteboard

Compared to chalkboards, for daily use, a whiteboard is easy to use, easy to clean, and lasts for a long time.

Stonehouse Signs Custom Magnetic Dry Erase BoardThere are several practical reasons why dry erase boards are becoming more popular:

  • Using dry erase markers completely eliminates messy chalk dust.  It also offers an advantage in areas containing dust-sensitive equipment.
  • Dry erase boards can be pre-printed with lines, grids or a design of your choice. Click here for more examples of Stonehouse Signs' Custom Dry Erase Boards for businesses
  • Dry erase markers are ergonomically friendly.
Using a marker on a dry erase board takes less time, effort, and pressure than writing on a chalkboard.
  • The surface of a porcelain steel or specially-treated dry erase board is stain, shadowing and ghosting resistant.  These boards stay clean and look great for years to come!  Since the surface is optimized to reduce residual marks, it comes clean with one wipe of your dry erase eraser. Stonehouse Signs' Custom "Chalkboard" Whiteboard
  • Improvements in digital printing technology makes it possible to produce custom whiteboards with full color designs, something you can't achieve with a chalkboard surface.  Stonehouse Signs can even produce dry erase boards that have the look of a chalkboard but the functionality of a whiteboard!
  • High-quality dry erase boards are easy to clean. Even if you leave marker on the board for weeks, all you need is a bit of soap and water to get your board looking new again.  And with a few tips and tricks, you can even get rid of those hard-to-remove marks, or an accidental use of a permanent marker.
  • Let your dry erase board double as a bulletin board!  A porcelain steel dry erase surface is magnetic, which allows you to use magnets to post hard copy notes, keep printed lists and schedules handy, and attach important papers directly to your board.
