Lockout/Tagout an OSHA Most Cited Violation

One of the most helpful tools OSHA releases each year is their list of most cited violations. In doing so, business owners have a chance to review their own safety policy, with increased focus on industry-wide trends from the previous year, to help keep their workers safe.

Of the 10 most cited OSHA violations for 2013, the eighth most cited involves the use of safety signs and safety tags to communicate lockout/tagout hazards. OSHA cited failure to implement their standard for “Lockout/Tagout – Training and Communication and Lockout or Tagout Device Application” 749 times. This dangerous citation indicates that if an accident were to happen, it could result in serious injury or death of employees. Yet it is also very easily rectified with standard Stonehouse Signs products.

For Lockout/Tagout violations, both having the proper signs and tags on hand and training employees on how to use them are important. OSHA states in 1910.147, Lockout/Tagout, “Tags…shall be provided by the employer for isolating, securing or blocking of machines or equipment from energy sources… Tags must be legible and understandable by all authorized employees, affected employees, and all other employees whose work operations are or may be in the area, in order to be effective.” Signs or notices detailing the OSHA lockout standards or reminding employees or contractors to lock out machines prior to servicing are not required by OSHA, but are a good part of any effective lockout/tagout employee communication program.

Use Stonehouse Signs’ various OSHA-compliant lockout/tagout tags and informational signs to keep your employees safe when working with electrical machinery.
