OSHA Most Cited Violations 2015

Each year, OSHA releases their most cited workplace safety violations for the preceding fiscal year, in the hopes that companies will fix the most common health and safety hazards before they cause an injury or fatality. In OSHA’s words, “OSHA publishes this list to alert employers about these commonly cited standards so they can take steps to find and fix recognized hazards addressed in these and other standards before OSHA shows up. Far too many preventable injuries and illnesses occur in the workplace.”

Stonehouse Signs OSHA Releases Most Cited Violations of 2015Although the final numbers of the most-cited violations for 2015 won’t be published until December, OSHA did recently release their preliminary top 10 violations. These are (in order of most cited):

  1. Fall Protection
  2. Hazard Communication
  3. Scaffolding
  4. Respiratory Protection
  5. Lockout/Tagout
  6. Powered Industrial Trucks
  7. Ladders
  8. Electrical – Wiring Methods
  9. Machine Guarding
  10. Electrical – General Requirements

Employers should note these most-cited violations are almost identical to the most-cited list for 2014:

  1. Fall Protection
  2. Hazard Communication
  3. Scaffolding
  4. Respiratory Protection
  5. Powered Industrial Trucks
  6. Lockout/Tagout
  7. Ladders
  8. Electrical – Wiring Methods
  9. Machine Guarding
  10. Electrical – General Requirements

For employers, these lists should be a wake-up call. Although safety in the workplace has improved greatly since OSHA was established in 1970, certain hazards continue to be cited at workplaces across the country, year after year. And although employers should be concerned with all workplace safety hazards, extra focus should be placed on identifying and remedying these most-cited hazards as they’ve been found to be a pervasive issue across a variety of industries.
