Although the number of pedestrian injuries has decreased in the last 10 years, the latest crash statistics (according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration [NHTSA]) show that 4,735 pedestrians were killed and 66,000 pedestrians were injured in traffic crashes in 2013. That is an average of 12 pedestrians killed and 180 injured per day. Children under the age of 14 and seniors age 65 and over were particularly vulnerable; Children under 14 accounted for about 15% of all pedestrian injuries, and seniors over 65 accounted for about 10% of all pedestrian injuries. Males were also particularly vulnerable to fatal pedestrian traffic crashes – more than two-thirds of pedestrians killed in traffic crashes were male. And alcohol use was also a significant contributing factor in pedestrian fatalities – about 49% of fatal traffic crashes involved alcohol use, either by the driver or the pedestrian.

Preventing pedestrian injuries and deaths is important, because many people rely on walking or cycling as their mode of transportation or for their physical activity. According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, a number of common-sense factors could lead to a reduction in pedestrian crashes: increased sidewalk or path availability, proper maintenance of walking paths and crosswalks, and pedestrians using available facilities and staying cautious and alert when walking or cycling near motor vehicle traffic. To help increase pedestrian safety, Stonehouse Signs offers a variety of Pedestrian Signs and Pedestrian Crossing Signs to help identify pedestrian crossing areas or restrict pedestrians or cyclists from certain areas. All Pedestrian Signs are available in a variety of high-quality, long-lasting materials, including MUTCD-compliant reflective aluminum that is good for low-light visibility. Or, if you need something other than our standard Pedestrian Signs, we can produce Custom Pedestrian Signs with your exact wording, colors or design needed.
