Stonehouse Signs In The 0.13 Percent

A recent Denver Business Journal article highlighted a source of pride for Stonehouse Signs. The article states that the challenges of new businesses are true – most Colorado businesses close within the first ten years, with 50 percent closing within five years, and about 66 percent closing within ten years. Only 0.13 percent of Colorado’s 637,000 businesses – or 810 – have been open for a century or more. And Stonehouse Signs is proud to be one of those rare long-lived businesses.

Stonehouse Signs Original Mine Safety Sign JW StonehouseStonehouse Signs was founded by J.W. Stonehouse. J.W. learned how to paint gold leaf on store windows from his father in Chicago, then took his trade west, eventually settling in Colorado in about 1910. There, J.W. saw the need for standardized safety signs in the mining industry, a dangerous industry where rules and regulations could vary from site to site. Specifically, J.W. noticed how the mining bell signals that indicated to the hoist operators whether to raise, lower or stop the hoist varied, and that accidents occurred when the operators misinterpreted the meaning of the bell signals. Seeing how standardization across all mine sites could lead to increased safety and fewer accidents, J.W. lobbied the Colorado Bureau of Mines for standardized bell signals, and once enacted he sold screen printed safety signs explaining the new standardized bell signals. Thus a new industry – standardized safety signs – and a new company was born.
